Players
Players in the VBA will be represented by unique NFTs that each have their own attributes. While some, such as appearance or birthday, will be primarily cosmetic, there will be many attributes, like 3PT rating that determine how well your players will perform in games.

Everyone has a spot in the Metaverse. That’s why the VBA is building an extensive player ecosystem with diverse representation and backgrounds.
To that end, VBA season0 artwork was crafted to empower our users to find a personal avatar that fits their web3 persona.
Lastly, we chose to go with the iconic design of basketball cards to represent each player given their place in the history and culture of the sport - we hope you like it!

In addition to their appearance, each player will have a unique set of attributes. This data might be on chain or off chain, visible or invisible, and impact a player’s performance, or not.
Note: Some of the attributes that begin off chain will slowly move on chain as we develop the game to give GMs more security over their assets and give builders better access to information to create new tools for the community.

Rarity will impact player potential and will be highlighted through the background and frame design on each NFT. The VBA will be made up of Legendary, Elite, Rare, Special, and Underdog Players. The rarer the player, the higher a player's predicted base performance will be. However, that doesn't mean that a player who's an “Underdog” can't turn into the best player in the league, or a player who’s “Legendary” turns out to be a total bust.
season0 will feature the highest likelihood of getting a rarer players, with distributions as follows:
  • Underdog - 55%
  • Special - 34%
  • Rare - 7%
  • Elite - 3%
  • Legendary - 1%

Each player will have a preferred position(s) that is a combination of PG, SG, SF, PF, and C. Some players may just have 1 position, while others might have 3.
There will be a performance penalty when a player plays outside of their preferred position. This penalty varies based on how far away a player is from their preferred position. For example, a player with SG as their preferred position will have a small performance penalty when playing as an SF, and a large performance penalty when playing as a C.

Based off of their preferred position(s), a player is eligible for a play style such as “Pass First Guard” or “Slasher.” These play styles will inform trade-offs between player skills.
*Please note: For the compatible positions column in the table below, if a player has one of those preferred positions, they can inherit that given Play Style. For example, if a player has a preferred position as PG, SG they could quality as a Shooting Playmaker, Pass First Guard, Defensive Guard, Scoring Guard, Pure Shooter, or Slasher, as those are all PG or SG compatible.
Here is a complete list of Play Styles for season0:

Each player will have a set of skills that defines them as players and impacts their performance on the court. These skills include offensive, defensive, physical, and mental characteristics such as passing, stealing, athleticism, and vision.

Designed with progression/regression and retirement in mind, season0 players will have a years of experience attribute that ranges from 0 to 10. SOE will impact how a player progresses or regresses in future seasons of the game.
Our current thinking is that players can retire anywhere between 10 and 20 seasons and that current seasons played is no indication on their eventual retirement age. For example, a player with 0 vs 10 years of experience will have the same likelihood to retire at 20 seasons of experience (or 10, 11, 12, etc seasons of experience).
More details will be shared in advance of player aging.

Each player will have a birthdate and name that will have no impact on their performance.
  • Birthdate is fixed and has no year associated with it.
  • GMs will be able to give their players unique names in season0. This means that each name can only be used once - so make sure you move fast on getting your favorite names!
Last but not least, we believe in a world where users create backstories and rivalries with their VBA players and will be actively building more features here to help the community write their team story and the history of the league.
